About

C. Edwin Shoemaker, Attorney

I was born here in Knoxville, TN in 1953 and have lived and worked here most of my life. In my early teens my family moved to Atlanta, GA where I attended high school for several years before returning here to graduate from Holston High School in 1971.

I attended and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta in 1976 with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree majoring in English and German. I worked briefly for a legal publishing company in Atlanta. After enrolling in the University Of Tennessee School Of Law I graduated with my Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) in 1980. I received my Tennessee license to practice law in 1980 and entered into the private practice of law with a local firm.

In 1984 I had the privilege of going to work as a judicial law clerk for United States Bankruptcy Judge, Clive W. Bare. Judge Bare was a highly-respected bankruptcy jurist who was involved in the drafting and implementation of the major new bankruptcy code and system enacted under the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. The two years I was fortunate enough to spend with him were the inspiration for my decision to pursue the practice of bankruptcy law.

In the ensuing years I had the opportunity to approach bankruptcy law from a number of other perspectives. I served as a Chapter 7 Trustee and member of the Panel of Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustees for the Eastern District of Tennessee. I worked as a bankruptcy attorney for both the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and for several local banks, credit unions, and other lenders. This experience proved to be very useful to me in when I made a decision to open my own law firm in 1995 and to focus my practice on helping individuals get effective bankruptcy relief from their debts. In 1992 I earned a post-doctoral degree (L.L.M.) from the Emory University School of Law in Taxation.

Since opening my own firm I have represented hundreds of individuals and small businesses in successful bankruptcy cases. One of the things that has been most gratifying to me over the years is to occasionally run into or get a call or Christmas card from a former client and to hear how much better they are doing.
